Joanna Kerns

Joanna Kerns (born Joanne Crussie DeVarona) is an American director and actress. She was born on February 12, 1953 in San Francisco, California to David Thomas DeVarona and Martha Louise (née Smith). She has three siblings including an older sister named Donna de Varona who is an Olympic gold medalist. Joanna herself competed in gymnastics and participated in the 1968 Olympic trials. She majored in dance at UCLA but dropped out to work in a New York stage production with Gene Kelley. Afterwards she moved back to California and landed guest roles in various TV shows thought the late 70's and early 80's. During that time she married a commercial director named Richard Kerns in 1976 and had a daughter named Ashley Cooper. They would divorce nine years later right before she was cast in her best known role as "Maggie Seaver" on the ABC network sitcom "Growing Pains". The series ran for seven years from 1985 to 1992. Afterwards, Joanna continued acting and in 1995 married prominent Los Angeles architect Marc Appleton. She also appeared in two "Growing Pain" reunion movies in 2000 and 2004. Kerns started to transition to a role behind the camera as a director working on such shows as "Dawson's Creek", "Scrubs" and "Grey's Anatomy". In 2015 Kerns directed two episodes of The CW network musical comedy "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend".
